Today’s video is dedicated to vintage Marx toys, a favorite from the late 60s and early 70s, especially among those of us who grew up during that era.

The Golden Age of Marx Toys

The Louis Marx Company was a prominent name in the toy industry during the 60s and 70s, known for a wide range of toys including action figures, train sets, and small soldier figures. However, today’s focus is on their larger action figures, which hold a special place in the hearts of many collectors.

Iconic Action Figures

Marx toys were famous for their detailed and diverse action figures. Some of the most notable lines included:

  • Johnny West: A western-themed series featuring cowboys and horses.
  • Noble Knights: A medieval series with knights like Sir Stuart.
  • Stony Smith: A military series that competed with G.I. Joe.
  • Astronauts: Reflecting the space race era.

These figures are highly sought after in the collector’s market due to their nostalgic value and detailed craftsmanship.

Tips for Collecting Marx Action Figures

If you’re new to collecting Marx action figures or looking to expand your collection, here are some essential tips:

Get the Right Guide

A valuable resource for any collector is the “Encyclopedia of Marx Action Figures.” This book is filled with full-color pictures and detailed descriptions of all the different series of action figures produced by Marx. It’s an indispensable guide for identifying and valuing your collectibles.

Be Cautious with Re-releases

One challenge in collecting Marx action figures is distinguishing between vintage items and re-releases. About 20 years ago, Marx reissued some of their popular lines, including the Noble Knights. The re-released figures and their accessories are virtually identical to the originals, making it difficult to tell them apart. Here are some tips:

  • Inspect the Armor: Vintage armor pieces often have cracked tabs due to the material’s age and quality. If the tabs are intact and show no signs of wear, it might be a re-release.
  • Check for Playwear: Vintage toys were played with extensively, so look for signs of wear and tear. Re-releases often appear too pristine.
  • Know the Horses: While the figures were reissued, as far as I know, the horses were not. If you find a vintage horse with armor, it’s likely original.

Display with Pride

Whether you own vintage pieces or re-releases, Marx toys make excellent display items. Their vibrant colors and nostalgic designs bring back fond childhood memories. For example, I proudly display my original Sir Stuart alongside a re-release. Despite the quality issues and limited articulation, these figures remain beloved collectibles.

Collecting Tips and Market Insights

The Marx toys market is active and dynamic, with many collectors seeking to buy, sell, and trade items. Here are some final tips:

  • Quality Matters: Due to the lower quality of materials used, finding pieces in good condition can be challenging. Prioritize items with minimal damage and complete accessories.
  • Beware of High Prices: Given the prevalence of re-releases, be cautious about spending large sums on supposed vintage items. Always verify their authenticity.
  • Enjoy the Hobby: Collecting should be fun and rewarding. Display your collection proudly and enjoy the memories these toys evoke.
