Today, we’re diving into the fascinating world of vintage Mego superheroes figures. In this video, I compare the 50th Anniversary Mego figures with the original vintage ones from the 1970s. Let’s take a closer look at the 70s World’s Greatest Superheroes line from my personal collection.
The Revolutionary Mego Figures of the 70s
Mego Corporation revolutionized the toy industry with their 8-inch action figures. These figures were innovative because of their interchangeable parts. The bodies were mostly the same, with different colored hands and heads for each character. This made production cost-effective and allowed for a diverse range of figures.
However, the quality wasn’t always top-notch. The figures were held together with elastic bands, and the joints used simple rivets, which often broke with heavy play. Thankfully, these bands can be replaced, and there are plenty of online tutorials for that.
A Peek into My Collection
Let’s start with Spider-Man. This figure is in excellent condition, a testament to Mego’s popularity in the 70s. Mego’s World’s Greatest Superheroes line included characters from various franchises, such as Planet of the Apes, Wizard of Oz, Kiss, and Charlie’s Angels, making them highly collectible.
Next, we have one of Spider-Man’s arch-nemeses, the Lizard. This original figure comes complete with his doctor’s coat and tail. Another gem in my collection is a Penguin figure with an intact jacket and a perfectly painted hat, making it a real treasure.
Batman is another fascinating figure, though it highlights Mego’s quality issues. This Batman still has its original chest emblem, which was a simple sticker. These stickers rarely stuck to cloth for long, making an original sticker quite rare. Batman originally had a removable cowl, but later versions had a one-piece head for cost reasons.
Robin is a bit more typical of the era; this figure is missing its sticker, a common occurrence. Finally, we have Superman, another excellent piece with its original sticker and cape in great condition. I acquired these superhero figures from a family friend who had kept them in remarkable condition.
Why Collect Mego Figures?
These figures are highly collectible, especially if they have original accessories like belts, capes, boots, and gloves. Most of the World’s Greatest Superheroes didn’t come with weapons, but complete and original figures can fetch decent money.
