The collectibles industry has matured in its understanding of the “mint in-package” concept and that items are worth more if they are kept in their original packaging and in good condition. In the 1990s, this understanding really took hold and a large amount of collectibles in their original packaging increased greatly. Because of this, collectibles after that point don’t hold as high of a value because of the volume of still-packaged items out in the marketplace.
When it comes to the topic of sealed vs unsealed or mint in-package, it’s always best to stick to pre-1990s collectibles. Prior to the 1990s, there were a lot less people in the collectibles market so many items were not kept in their original packaging. Items were handled and oftentimes parts or accessories were lost. If you are in the collectibles market and are looking to build your sealed in-package collection, the general rule of thumb is… go for the old!
