Working in the collectibles market, there is a phenomenon that I call “catching the wave of value.” What do I mean? Within any collectible marketplace (cards, toys, comics, etc.), there are peaks and valleys of consumer interest. Usually the peak is near the beginning of the collectible life cycle and the valley is at the end. Producers of collectibles plan for these waves of weaning consumer interest levels by producing less inventory of a given item. It is these lower waves that tend to generate collectibles of higher value simply because they are more scarce. Learn out this topic in my video – Scarcity of Items Drives Their Value.
